Magic Mushrooms
AKA: Liberty caps, mushies, shroomies, shroomsWhat are they?
Magic mushrooms grow wild in the UK.
They’re mushrooms containing hallucinogenic chemicals that make you see and hear things which aren’t there and make colours, smells and textures seem different. The most common type is the Liberty cap mushroom.
Users eat them fresh or cooked, or drink them as a tea.
How does it make you feel?
The effects of taking magic mushrooms are similar to those of taking LSD. They can make you feel happy, giggly and excited. These effects are often called a trip and last around six to nine hours.
You can’t end the trip once it starts, which can be a big problem if you have a bad trip, where you experience feelings like fear, paranoia and depression, or have scary hallucinations. Bad trips are more likely if you were feeling unhappy before you took magic mushrooms.
What are the health effects?
It’s easy to mistake magic mushrooms for similar looking poisonous mushrooms which can sometimes kill.
Users often experience nausea, sickness, stomach cramps, vomiting and diarrhoea. Some people experience flashbacks, where memories of past trips crop up, years after taking magic mushrooms.
Magic mushrooms aren't addictive.
The law
Both fresh and 'prepared' (boiled, cooked, dried or crushed) magic mushrooms are classified as Class A drugs. This means you could face a seven-year prison sentence for having some (possession).
If you’re convicted of supplying (selling or giving them to other people), the maximum prison sentence is life.
